What turned the tide in WWII? Returning to Festival Place on Nov. 4, noted Canadian historians – David O’Keefe and Ted Barris – present another evening of history storytelling. Using images, sounds and veterans’ stories they’ve gathered, two of this country’s best on-stage presenters explore the attack on Dieppe and the longest battle of the war, the Battle of the Atlantic, as events that determined the outcome of WWII.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied attack on the French port of Dieppe on August 19, 1942. Until a few years ago, even the Canadians who were part of Operation Jubilee considered the mission a pointless exercise and a waste of Canadian lives. Historian and “War Junk” TV host David O’Keefe has gathered even more research on the subject since his book One Day in August was published in 2013. He’ll reveal additional information he’s unearthed about the real story behind those nine bloodiest hours in Canadian military history.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the darkest days of Battle of the Atlantic when marauding U-boats racked up the greatest tonnage destruction of merchant shipping between North America and Britain of the war. Indeed, in 1942, Winston Churchill pulled Canadian escorts off the North Atlantic convoy run. In his 20th book Battle of the Atlantic, historian Ted Barris shows how – with the right equipment, better anti-submarine tactics and time – the Canadians would lead the campaign to drive U-boat wolf packs from the mid-Atlantic and ensure an Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe.
